Rudi Bauer gained his degree in viticulture and winemaking in Austria & Germany before coming to New Zealand on a 6 month working holiday Visa. Rudi fell in love and stayed working in Central Otago and Canterbury (and his off seasons in California and Oregon) before establishing Quartz Reef in Bendigo, Central Otago in 1996. He specialises in Méthode Traditionelle, Pinot Gris and in particular Pinot Noir and it’s many dimensions. The vineyards are certified organic and bio-dynamic.
Widely considered as a far-sighted pioneer of the Central Otago Wine region, Rudi was awarded winemaker of the year in 1999 and again in 2010. His infectious enthusiasm for his craft and his dry Austrian humour make him an entertaining dinner host.
